"`He did what he had to do'?" The cool press of his fingertips beneath her chin startled her. More in surprise than at his insistence, she looked up. His fangs gleamed in a hard smile. "You said almost the same of the vampire, and his feeding from humans. If doing what onèhas to do' is your criterion for excusing behavior you don't sanction, little wonder you forced me last evening.

Whose reluctance infuriated you more—mine or yours?"

"That question assumes I did it because I was angry." Had she been?

"And now evasion."

"Uncertainty."

"And this?" He tugged the pendant dangling from her wide velvet choker. "I am uncertain if this is supposed to act as enticement for me or protection for you."

"It is neither. It's just a pretty piece of jewelry I saw in Vogue." She caught his wrist. "You want to know if I'll force you again."

"Yes." He didn't try to escape her grasp.

"I prefer not to."

"But you would."

Yes, but this time for the right reason. "Why do I need to?" But she knew the answer to that. This bedroom screamed it. "A demon is sacrificing vampires in your city. Will I need to?"

His jaw clenched. "No."

"Good." She didn't realize how tension had knotted inside her until his answer eased it, and she released it in a short laugh. "I haven't provided supper according to a schedule since I died, but I'll make an exception for you. And the best part is that I won't be on my feet for hours preparing it."

Brief amusement sweetened his psychic scent, but his voice was flat. "Because you have to."

"Yes, though it would be just as easy for me to find a vampire to do it." Her grip tightened. "It's also because I want to. Why does it have to be one or the other?"

Lucas didn't have the strength to break her hold, but even without hundreds of years of training, he knew how to turn it to his advantage. He pulled her toward him.

And she knew a dozen ways to reclaim it, but she let herself fall against him. Her silk top was thin; her nipples drew taut against the chilled cotton of his shirt, the hardness of his chest.
